This was one of the best ever episodes.
Ok major thing: Peggy and the candy. Please tell me you got that....
Peggy who is becoming Don, being ballsy at the pitch, having sex of sorts in the afternoon, even going to the movies alone like he did once, and other things, did something so verrryyy interesting.
She needed this candy she said was about Don, something about violet flavor. Remember one of the most heartbreaking moments in Mad Men, when Don shoves Betty, and then Bobby comes in asking Daddy about his dad, "We need to get you a new daddy"...? Remember Don told Bobby about his dad liked a certain candy, "tasted like violets" Pull out your dvd and watch it again real quick. The following will make sense..
That's what Peggy was doing in the very beginning, did you catch that??? Where did that come from? They've had more confiding moments than we're allowed to see, bastard writers. Peggy knows about Don's dad and the violet candy, all within her process of becoming Don.
We had again a tryptic of sorts: Peggy, Don and Roger all failing in their relationships at the same time.
Peggy's was the most interesting. We saw in prior season 5 episodes Pete becoming Don. Here, Peggy was was totally Don. Did you catch what was my fav part of the episode, Peggy's response to the negative reaction to the pitch, and more importantly, her laying down on the couch in total reference to the Mad Men premiere episode?
Even with the detail of her sleeping the afternoon away with the secretary waking her; just like she did with Don, she was his secretary waking him. She's becoming Don. That visual was my fav of the epeisode, her laying down on the couch.
But we just spent the early portion of this season watching Pete becoming Don as well, even down to the detail of his house in the burbs.
And, Pete and Peggy have kinda had their own Pete-induced competition kinda.
Get it???
So Peggy after being beaten down, is it a case she's using sex to compensate, achieve power, telling the guy the what it is and what to do taking charge right after she tried to take charge and lost? To me, I think more that's likely what it is, that more human quality, rather than what will be the typical hackneyed cliche you go girl response. I think it's human esteem related within the character herself, rather than the social statement most morons will insist it is.
Obscure reference: Roger talking about double aluminum something, Don saying I remember twins and a hospital...
Orange sherbert. Howard Johnson is half orange, sherbert is orange, Megan was wearing orange, and a few seasons ago Betty's friend came over to borrow a dress, and Betty offered a bunch, one of them being an orange one where she says, you'll look like sherbert. Ok I don't think orange nor sherbert has any actual reference, I think it's more of a case people who write for a living get certain ideas in their head and repeat them for no reason.
My second fav moment of the episode?
Megan really stabs into Don, " Why don't you call your mother"
